The practice
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice that supports the body's natural ability to heal — physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The word itself means 'universal life energy': the invisible force that animates all living things.
Origins
A Practice Born from Stillness
Reiki was developed in Japan in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, a spiritual teacher who discovered the healing system after a profound period of meditation and fasting on Mount Kurama. He called it a method for achieving personal wholeness — a way of aligning body, mind, and spirit with the natural flow of life.
From Japan, Reiki traveled to Hawaii through Hawayo Takata in the 1930s, and from there spread across the Western world. Today it is practiced in hospitals, hospices, wellness centers, and private practices on every continent — a testament to its gentle power and universal resonance.

The science & the mystery
How Does Reiki Work?
Every living being is sustained by a field of energy — what Eastern traditions call 'ki', 'chi', or 'prana'. When this energy flows freely, we feel vital, clear, and at ease. When it becomes blocked or depleted — through stress, trauma, illness, or emotional pain — we feel it as fatigue, anxiety, physical discomfort, or a sense of being stuck.
A Reiki practitioner acts as a conduit for universal life energy, channeling it through their hands to the recipient. This gentle infusion of energy helps dissolve blockages, restore flow, and activate the body's innate healing intelligence. The practitioner does not direct or control the energy — they simply hold the space for it to go where it is needed most.
The five Reiki principles
Just for today, do not anger
Release the grip of frustration and meet each moment with equanimity.
Just for today, do not worry
Trust the unfolding of life and release anxiety about what has not yet come.
Just for today, be grateful
Cultivate appreciation for the gifts — seen and unseen — that surround you.
Just for today, work honestly
Show up fully and with integrity in all that you do.
Just for today, be kind to every living thing
Extend compassion to yourself and all beings you encounter.

Common questions
What Reiki Is Not
Reiki is a religion
Reiki has no religious doctrine, dogma, or deity. It is a spiritual practice in the broadest sense — it invites connection to life itself — but it is compatible with any faith or none at all.
You have to believe in it for it to work
Reiki is not faith healing. It works on animals and infants — beings who have no concept of belief. An open mind is welcome; belief is not required.
Reiki is just relaxation
While deep relaxation is a consistent and welcome effect, Reiki often catalyzes much deeper shifts — emotional releases, physical healing, and profound spiritual insights that clients do not anticipate.
Distance Reiki cannot be as effective
Energy is not bound by physical space. Distance sessions are equally powerful to in-person work — a fact that surprises many first-time clients and delights them.
Experience It for Yourself
Words can only carry you so far. The real understanding of Reiki comes through direct experience — through the warmth in your hands, the quiet that settles in your chest, the shift you feel when you rise from the table.
